I have to agree that the healthcare issues are being neglected with all the lies and anger being thrown back and forth between both parties. Unfortunately, this has become the state of our country. I used to think that greed was the biggest problem of our country, but I am thinking the more underlying issue is honesty and integrity. It seems that lying and deception is not only the normal for our country leaders, but even our church leaders. We witness it everyday with all aspects of life and it is to the point that the honest people are looked at as the oddballs and most likely to be persecuted or hated. There is no trust in politicians, clergy, media anymore. Each seems to have their own agenda and it is usually self serving and short termed.
So how do you form an opinion on a important issue like healthcare when there appears to be nothing but deception and lies from whatever source you find?

Constantein,

I agree...change is difficult, if not impossible. Education is key. Along with education, we also need constructive dialogue with people of different races, classes, and nationalities. And until change happens, those who bear the burden of racism, misused power, coercion, and imperialism will have to continue to do what they have to do to survive. It's a long road. Hopefully we can get there. Thanks for the post.

The most honest white person will say it this way a nigga is a nigga don't matter were they from. You wondering if amirica steel racist i'll says yes even tough they don't want to admit it. The only way to conquer racism is to reeducate the people, but i don't think that is going to take place any time soon, because true confusion the elite get to stay in power longer and they get to make decision for everyone, believe it or not that is just the way it is somethings will never change unless we start making changes as a people, do what we have to do to survive.

jewels, thanks for your thoughts. TPS allows people to stay 6-18 months. They are allowed to work if they can find jobs. When there are extreme instances like the one in Haiti, I have no qualms with the US opening its door to people. People are literally eating grass and tree bark.

What does it mean for it to be something that the US cannot handle? We have food, a strong nonprofit sector, there are jobs out there (though perhaps not ones that make $15/hr), and our financial situation is exponentially better than Haiti's. As a matter of fact, our economy in the midst of the latest recession is much better than Haiti's has ever been.

The question for me is how we do not take people in when it is an extreme situation? What is the worst that could happen? We're not talking about terrorists...we're talking about starving and suffering people. Also, the US's involvement with Haiti politically and economically has not always been fantastic.

doc, many in immigration/refugee work believe that racism/prejudice lies at the heart of our current policy towards Haiti. There have been situation in recent history where TPS has been granted for natural disasters. But not for Haiti at this point.

I wonder if there is still a lot of prejudice against the Haitians. There was a HUGE rate of HIV there back in the early 1980s and 1990s, and there was a lot of political pressure to not let any Haitians in to the US. I'm sure the rates are still really high, given the level of poverty and lack of education and treatment.

very sad. must be very bad there.

But at what point does it become too much for the US to handle? We do have food, not alot of jobs, but some, and our financial situation is not very good either. This place might be a whole lot better for the Haitians but how do we determine who gets to come? how long can they stay? who do we send back and when?

I don't know the history of our TPS for other countries, but just my intial thoughts.

I like what justadoc had to say.

Personally, I find myself emotionally connected to those stories. I'm probably more likely to donate to a cause where I see faces, hear stories, etc. If I just hear statistics and numbers, I might not feel as connected.

Perhaps that's wrong to say, but I think most people connect more to faces and stories. It puts a "name" to that situation. Instead of just donating to such and such orphanage, I'm going to be helping little Susie with her sweet blond curls find a home.
